What is Eastern Psychology?
Eastern psychology blends philosophy, religion, and science to explore the mind, aiming to alleviate pain and suffering while enhancing mental health and well-being. Unlike Western psychology, which tends to be more outward-focused and symptom-driven, Eastern psychology takes a holistic approach, emphasizing individual life circumstances and personal choices. Therapy in this field often seeks to restore balance among the body, mind, and spirit, nurturing personal strengths.
While this is a simplification, a key distinction is that Western psychology primarily targets mental health disorders, whereas Eastern psychology is centered on enhancing overall mental well-being. Western practices focus on observing, categorizing, and modifying behaviors, often leading to a therapeutic approach that emphasizes diagnosis and treatment of psychopathology. In contrast, Eastern psychology delves into the workings of the mind and seeks to free individuals from pain and suffering, promoting a deeper understanding of their mental state.
Eastern psychology also provides tools for everyday living, helping individuals achieve optimal functioning and psychological wellness. Through inner development, people gain a broader perspective of their place within the whole, fostering improved relationships with themselves, others, and their environment.
Why Choose to Study Eastern Psychology?
This program equips students to become Eastern psychologists, providing them with the skills to practice in this field. It also offers valuable insights for Western psychologists and other mental health professionals such as social workers, presenting a fresh approach to supporting individuals. Additionally, health practitioners like osteopaths and naprapaths can greatly benefit from the program, as it enhances their own mental well-being while offering compassionate, holistic care to their clients.
